    The completed ragtop conversion
In this project, Andrew Totolos installs a sliding ragtop in a customized Scion xB.

Now that the ragtop has been installed, it's time to complete the project by installing the modified headliner. First, the factory dome light wiring must be extended to reach the new mounting location up in front.

Materials and tools used in this final phase of the project:

    splice connectors
    18-gauge wire extensions
    silicone
    self-tapping screws
    duckbill pliers

Safety Alert: Always disconnect the negative battery cable before you begin any electrical work on your vehicle.

    • Use splice connectors to attach 18-gauge wire extensions to the end of the factory wiring (figure A).

    • Reattach the factory harness at the other end of the extensions and tuck the wiring up above the passenger's side door and across the front of the roof to the new dome light location (figure B).

    • After you have relocated the dome light wiring, apply a thin bead of silicone around the outside of the frame and attach the foam insulation (figure C).

    • Next, attach the metal dome light support to the front of the roof with self-tapping screws (figure D).

    • Then slide the headliner back in place and hook it back onto the blue headliner clips and pull the dome light wiring through the new hole in the headliner.

    • Attach the dome light to the wiring and screw it into place.

    • Once the headliner is secured, you can pull out the drop cloth.

    • Reinstall all of the plastic trim pieces (figure E), along with the visors and the rearview mirror.

    • Begin to fold the headliner cloth around the ragtop frame.

    • Slide the pinch molding over the headliner materials (figure F), and work your way completely around the top.

    • Pull the cloth tightly so it lays flat against the roof, and use duckbill pliers to squeeze the pinch molding and lock the fabric in place.

    • Trim the headliner material tightly against the inside of the pinch molding and the retro ragtop installation is complete.

Important: Included in this summary are the steps in this automotive procedure as shown in the episode. These steps are general guidelines that are applicable to most vehicles. With any particular car or truck, there may be procedures, specifications, settings, tolerances, components, etc. that are specific to that vehicle. There are also variations according to the type and brand of upgrade-kit you select. Always consult your vehicle's service manual when undertaking significant automotive repairs, and read and follow the manufacturer's directions and precautions that come with your kit or replacement parts.
