Tools used for installing the wheel-well lights
|
|
In this project Andrew Totolos, host of DIY's Tricked Out, installs under-body light effects on a1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse. The underbody LED tubes have already been installed. The second phase of the project is jazzing up the wheel wells with some LEDs, complete with an under-dash mounted interior control unit.Materials/Tools: LED wheel well kit eyelet connectors electrical tape shop tools hook-and-loop tape fuse taps alcohol and clean rags grabber tool self-tapping screws jack stands
Steps:The best place for the LED control unit to be installed is beside the kick panel (figure A) because it's close to the fuse panel and you won't have to run any extension wires. Also, it's close to the firewall, so you can run the wiring right to the engine. Use fuse taps (figure B) in case you ever want to take the lighting kit off the car. Fuse taps are easier to install outside of the car.
- First up are the power leads. The red wire hooks into the constant power source (figure C). Yellow attaches to the ignition. Black is the ground wire, which gets an eyelet connector instead.
- The blue wire is for an alarm system, and the white is the courtesy light. You won't need both of them, so snip them off (figure D)and wrap them with electrical tape to prevent confusion.
When the wiring is ready, stick some industrial strength hook-and-loop tape to the back of the control unit (figure E). It's now ready to hook up.Important: Before proceeding any further, remove the negative terminal from the vehicle's battery to prevent any electrical problems.Attach the fuse taps (figure F) in the proper place in the fuse box. The ground hooks to a screw at the kick panel.
When everything is hooked up, clean the dash near the kick panel with alcohol. Secure the other adhesive side of the hook-and-loop tape to the car (figure G).The control wire goes to the engine bay through a grommet under the dash. Pull it through with a grabber tool (figure H), and then run down the engine bay through the driver's-side wheel well to be hooked up later.
