Installing the Fuel Pump, Fuel Filter and Fuel Lines

With the fuel tank installed, the next phase of the fuel-system overhaul includes the installation of an upgraded fuel-pump, a fuel filter and new fuel lines. Following is a summary of the installation of these parts as shown in the episode.

    • Because the Alfa restoration involves conversion from a fuel-injection system to a carburetor system, a different and newer fuel pump is installed. The original pump (figure A) was a high-pressure pump designed for mechanical fuel-injection. The replacement pump is a smaller, low-pressure pump designed to work in conjunction with the carburetor that will be installed in the vehicle.

    • With this fuel pump, as with any directional pump, the mounting orientation is critical. The flow-direction is indicated on the front face of the pump (figure B).

    • The fuel filter is also to be upgraded. The old style filter is large and features an all-metal design (figure C).

    • The new filter installed in the restoration is much smaller and is made of clear plastic (figure D). This is actually a temporarily filter that will be replaced after a few weeks. The clear plastic housing allows the condition of the fuel, and possible buildup of any debris in the fuel lines, to be monitored carefully.

    • The new fuel pump is mounted to the floor-pan, just behind the rear differential (figure E). The location of the newer pump is selected based on access to re-routed fuel lines and proximity to the other components beneath the vehicle.

    • New fuel lines are attached to the new pump using small hose clamps (figure F).

    • After installing the fuel pump, the fuel filter is installed in the new fuel line (figure G).

Tip: An electric fuel-pump works best in a "pusher" application. In other words, this type of pump can push fuel more efficiently than it can draw it. For that reason, it's best to mount the fuel pump in close proximity to the fuel tank to achieve optimum performance and operation.

In the segment that follows, new dual carburetors are installed in the Alfa.
