  • Automotive Quick Tip: Replacing an Auto Fuse
  • From "Ask DIY"
    episode ADI-407
    advertisement

Ask DIY automotive expert Trisha Hessinger offers tips on identifying and replacing a blown or worn out fuse in your automobile. To change a fuse, you'll first need to locate your fuse box. It may be in the dashboard or inside the engine compartment. Exact locations vary from model to model, but your owner's manual will tell you where yours is if you have trouble locating it.

Important: Before doing any work on the fuse box, be certain that the vehicle ignition is turned OFF.

It should be easy to spot a blown fuse, as it will be black inside or have a broken filament.

For most fuses, you can use a bobby pin or paper clip to help in removing the old fuse. Or you can buy an inexpensive fuse tool at most auto parts stores.

Replace the blown fuse with a fuse of the same load amperage. The amperage is printed on the fuse itself.

Once the bad fuse has been replaced, put the fuse-box cover back on and make certain that it is fastened securely.
