If you find that your car heater is taking too long to heat up, check your radiator. Here's a brief troubleshooting checklist from automotive expert Trisha Hessinger. - First, check the radiator to make sure it contains enough coolant.
- Remove radiator cap, start engine and insert a thermometer into the coolant ( figure A). It should reach at least 180 degrees Fahrenheit -- if it doesn't, you probably have a bad thermostat.
- Next, check the interior heat vents. Place the thermometer in the vents and turn the heat on full blast. The temperature should reach about 100 degrees.
- Finally, check the radiator hoses (figure B), which should be hot to the touch. If the hoses aren't hot, you could have a problem with the heater core or water control valve.
