    Radiator Hoses and Connections

Once the radiator has been bolted in place, the cooling-system installation can be finished by checking all the connections and installing new hoses and hose clamps. Hoses include the lower radiator hose, bypass hose and upper radiator hose. Following are some tips for installing the hoses and making the connections.

Cooling system hoses that are in good condition are critical to the cooling system. They should be checked for condition frequently, and replaced when needed. It may be hard to judge the condition by the outside of the hose (figure A). It's also important to check the inside of the hose to see if the inner surfaces have degraded. If there is any doubt, change the hoses. It's a relatively inexpensive maintenance procedure that could prevent costly engine repairs. If it's necessary to replace a hose, it's best to go ahead and replace all of them. Like tires, the ideal situation is to replace them all at the same time so that they age and wear equally, at the same rate.

Whenever you change hoses, replace the hose clamps as well (figure B). Hose clamps wear out just as hoses do -- sometimes even more quickly. A clamp that is corroded or has lost some of its spring can cause leaks, and result in overheating problems. Hose clamps are very inexpensive and easy to install, and can also prevent a situation that might lead to engine damage.

When installing a hose, first spray the inside surface with some white grease (figure C). The grease will lubricate the rubber, making it easier to slide onto the connection, and will help ensure a good seal.

In our demonstration, the upper radiator hose was attached first onto the radiator connection (figure D), and then onto the neck of the thermostat (figure E). The lubricant made the connection easier and helped permit the hose to be adjusted into just the right position.
